We are all aware of the new Ransomware that has been circulating these past days, and yes, we are talking about WannCry ransomware, the one that made more than 230,000 computers get infected, with a really bad virus. The particular virus locks and encrypts all of your important files, making it impossible for you to reaccess them, without making a payment of $300 at first, because if you don’t pay it in time, the price climbs to $600 after some days, and if you don’t pay it at all, all of your files get locked forever.
The system that encrypts the files encrypts them in a way that only the person with the correct code can decrypt them, and in this case, only the attackers have the code, and you should pay the amount asked if you want to get it and decrypt your files.
Some people did indeed pay the amount asked, but the majority didn’t, and some others didn’t even get infected.
The infected computers were them that had an old version of Windows installed, like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003.
If you didn’t get infected (or if you did), download the MS17-010 patch here, it will help your computer stay safe.
These are some steps you should follow to never get a virus:
- Never EVER, download something you aren’t aware of. If you want to download something, download it from an authentic provider, like for example Photoshop from Adobe.
- Keep your computer maintained with updates. Never skip an update, as it may cost you your files, as with this case.
- Keep an antivirus on at all times, just google “Free antivirus”, download it, and it’ll do the job.
- Don’t use Torrent files. They are loaded with viruses, and ransomwares sometimes get undetected from antiviruses, so be REALLY aware.
